(The sites and books listed below have been helpful to me.)

If you are a writer and want to know how you can get your
books into print, read on. THERE I have listed:

ON  PUBLISHING

If you are thinking of self publishing, YOU will need to find
information about every step you'll have to take!

You will need to find out about: Writing, editing and proofreading your
book.

If you need pictures and can't draw or paint you'll need to find an
illustrator.

Computer software or book designers.

Starting your Publishing business.

Coming up with a budget.

Coming up with the money.

Bar codes.

ISBN numbers. (Whether to buy your own ISBN numbers. Around
$250 for 10 numbers! One number would be about $150!)

Decide if you will do POD or do offset printing. (This will be a clear
money thing! POD is cheaper!)

Find a printer. (For picturebooks that may be overseas for 4-color
printing and lower cost. Or POD which stands for Print-on-Demand
Printing. They can print just one book at a time.) I used POD.

Book consultants and packagers.

Whether to book shepherd or not. (You will not need a book shepherd,
if you read the right books and can get your head around all that needs
to be done!)

If not using POD, you will need to know about warehousing and
fulfillment services and
book returns.

Marketing help and/or plan.

Galleys.

Website and SEO (Search Engine Optimization.) For me this is the
hard stuff.) Take your time and learn this for yourself!

AND much, much more!

WHAT IS POD?
* Print On Demand or
POD is a type of
printing where as little
as one book is printed
at a time and therefore
there is no inventory or
storage. There will still
be returns but fewer.
NOTE:
I have the bare bones
of what is needed to
learn the publishing
business. I advice you
to do your own
research. The internet
has much of what
you will need. There
are sites for just about
everything on
self-publishing. And
one site will lead to
others plus books to
read and people who
can do the jobs you
can't do yourself. I've
made this list to
inform other
would-be
self-publishers so that
they may avoid
SOME of the
mistakes I've made. I
suggest if you are like
me and need to keep
costs down that you
learn to do as much
as you can for
yourself.
